Our Educational Vision
Polyglot Linguistic Institute (PLI in Tokyo, Japan), has been engaged in providing exceptional foreign language training program to nurture professional business language and translation skills of European languages especially for Latin languages including French, Italian, and Spanish for Japanese nationals. PLI has engaged in private education for top management and employees of Japanese corporations (such as Sony, Bridgestone, Nomura Securities, etc) and also enthusiastic language learners both domestically (Japan) and internationally for over 30 years.
While we mainly provided foreign languages education for Japanese learners, we also have been strongly frustrated by observing the fact that extremely shallow and inefficient Japanese language education for foreigners has been prevailing across the globe, especially by Japanese “native” teachers who lack the knowledge of the fundamental structural differences between Japanese and mother tongues of the students, facilitating frustration for the students and spoiling the beauty of learning Japanese language. They tend to utilize so-called “direct method”, which provides language training only in the language that the students are learning (i.e. French students learning Japanese are taught mainly or only through Japanese conversation or texts); however, this is awfully ineffective and inefficient especially in introductory level since it is almost impossible for beginners to understand fundamental grammatical and conceptual differences between the languages without precise and logical explanations in their mother tongues by teachers who own profound comprehension of both Japanese and the native languages of the students.
Since enormous differences exist between Japanese and other languages, especially between Western languages, it is indispensable for the Japanese language teachers to be trained and have the ability to skillfully explain the structural and phonetic differences between them; our educational staffs are native Japanese or equivalent level speakers all of whom received B.A. or higher degrees from Japanese universities in linguistics, Western literature, history etc, and most of them studied abroad in prestigious European and American universities and graduate schools.
